Ok, if you had any doubts about Star Wars Battlefront II space battles, I’m here to tell you that you can dispel those blasphemous thoughts at once. The first trailer for the Starfighter Assault gameplay mode debuted yesterday, and it has lots of incredible footage. It’s a fast paced trailer, so we broke it down for you just in case you missed anything.
The trailer starts off in the Unknown Regions with a Resurgence Star Destroyer in front of a planet (above). Now, we don’t know which planet as it is the Unknown Regions, so a new planet could be revealed during gameplay. The destroyer is also the same one from The Force Awakens which Finn and Poe escaped from in the beginning. In fact, you even hear another fighter say “Right behind ya’ Poe”. (8 second mark) It’s one of a number of references to new era films.
It then switches over to Endor, where we see Luke Skywalker’s Red Five squadron as Luke himself addresses R2 in the back of the ship (18 seconds). Not too much is shown, and it transitions to Fondor pretty quickly. A huge amount of Tie fighters fly out at once, and we see Darth Vader piloting his own ship (23 seconds). I can’t tell who the voice is, but it’s unfortunately not James Earl Jones.
He starts fighting a number of X-wings, but the location is what is exciting. You can tell they are in a giant tunnel, which indicates we will be able to fly through ships in battle. Just as the Resurgence Star Destroyer in the first scene, these spots will make for some interesting dog fighting battles.
The Millenium Falcon can be seen flying directly at Slave I (27 seconds), indicating that Jango may be a playable character. He was the original owner of the ship before Boba Fett, who has already been confirmed as a playable character. Y-Wings are going to be playable, which is awesome, and you can see them on display as well (30 seconds).
After the ship blows up, it transitions to another scene seamlessly over Ryloth. Venator class Star Destroyers pop out of hyper drive (38 seconds) and are flying right at the Lucrehulk Battleship, the same one we see in The Phantom Menace. Clone Wars fans should be very excited about the next part, as it appears that Ahsoka Tano is a character in the game. If that wasn’t cool enough, what she is doing is even cooler.
At the 46 second mark, we hear a female voice that sounds a lot like Ahsoka yell “Bank hard, incoming!” As she says it, you see Darth Maul’s ship, which is flying right at her, go invisible before barrel rolling out of the way. That’s right, ships can go invisible in Battlefront II. It’s kind of funny that we hear Darth Maul say “You can’t kill a Sith” considering what happened to him, but I digress. Ahsoka has yet to be confirmed as a character in the game, but the inclusion of her voice, and the fact Darth Maul is in the game, leads us to believe she will be.
The scene that transitions to Kamino, where we see Darth Maul being pursued and shot at by none other than Yoda in his Star Fighter. Now, I really hope we can use them in battle and they are not just shown, but Aiwha can be seen flying over Kamino (57 seconds). Being able to ride on their backs in battle would be an amazing sight, although we obviously wouldn’t have too many weapons at our disposal.
A lot was shown, and it’s easy to miss in such a short trailer. You can see the trailer below, and Star Wars Battlefront II releases on November 17th, 2017. EA Access members can play five days earlier on Xbox One for a max of 10 hours, and all your progress will carry over. All pre-orders come with special bonuses, including epic ability upgrades for each Trooper class in the Deluxe Edition ($79.99).
