2018 will have to work really hard to try and outdo 2017. Lucky for us, 2018 is going to see the release of Rockstar’s next epic adventure, Red Dead Redemption 2. Unless you’ve been wandering the desert for the last 7 years, you know that Red Dead 2 has the potential to be one of the greatest games of this generation. That belief alone has the Enthusiast team chomping at the bit to jump in.
Title: Red Dead Redemption 2
Publisher: Rockstar Games
Developer: Rockstar Studios
Release Date: Q2 2018
Red Dead Redemption 2 is a follow up to one of the best games released during the Xbox 360 generation, the original Red Dead Redemption. The events of the game will be set prior to the events in the original. Red Dead Redemption 2 has you taking the role of Arthur Morgan. Arthur is a member of Dutch van der Linde’s gang. This is the same gang that John Marston was helping to bring down in Red Dead Redemption. Red Dead Redemption 2 is a huge, open-world wild west game from the makers of the Grand Theft Auto franchise.
The majority of gamers fall on one of two sides when it comes to Red Dead Redemption, you either really liked it or you really loved it…not a lot of middle ground. Red Dead Redemption is personally my favorite game of the 360 generation and one of my favorite games of all time. Without writing 2000 words on why I loved Red Dead, I will just say that it’s a near perfect game. Knowing the legacy of the franchise, it’s hard not to be excited. The story trailer already sets up a handful of characters and a western adventure that is sure to take plenty of twists along the way. The graphical update is simply breathtaking. The vast expanse and variety of landscapes will take the experience to a completely new level. Rockstar are masters of world-building and storytelling. Everything points to Red Dead continuing that tradition in style.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is honestly a game that I don’t worry about at all. Rockstar have a steady record of delivering amazing games, and I don’t see that stopping with Red Dead 2. However, this is a category that we’ve decided to include, so there might be a few things to watch out for. First is hype. It’s hard for a game that’s been looked forward to for so long to live up to the hype. If the story is not excellent or the gameplay becomes redundant, there is a chance Red Dead 2 is just “good”, which by Red Dead standards is borderline unplayable. The other concern is the release date. This is not new for Rockstar, and it doesn’t normally have a negative effect on the final product, but delays of any kind can always cause issues with production.
Without a doubt. Worse case scenario, Red Dead Redemption 2 is a 7 out of 10, the game is still going to sell lot hotcakes. Something that I haven’t even touched on yet, because it hasn’t been officially unveiled, is Red Dead Online. Grand Theft Auto V is regularly on the best selling games each month despite being released over 4 years ago. Rockstar has continued releasing content and updates for Grand Theft Auto Online which has kept the audience engaged. There is no indication that we won’t see the same thing happen with Red Dead 2. I fully expect Red Dead 2 to be one of the best selling games for most of 2018.
