Video games have been a part of geek culture since the 1980’s. Innovation and reinvention happens on a regular basis. Still, rarely does a game come along that just blows people away. The Last Night is one of those games. Coming out of E3 2017, this small, indie unknown left as much of an impression as Sea of Thieves or the Xbox One X.
Title: The Last Night
Publisher: Raw Fury
Developer: Odd Tales
Release Date: TBD 2018
The Last Night is categorized as a Pixel Art Cinematic Platformer. Not much is known about the story but gamers will take the role of “Charlie”, described as a low class citizen is a cyberpunk-esque society. The mechanics will include stealth, shooting, and problem solving as well as Charlie’s ability to freely talk with any other character in the game.
The Last Night showed up at E3 2017 and took everyone by surprise. The game is drop dead gorgeous, from the pixel art design, the lived in environments, and detailed animations. The developer, Odd Tales, cite games like Flashback and Oddworld as inspiration for the game. It’s also evident from the opening moment that Blade Runner also influenced the world building. The Last Night has the potential to revive the long forgotten age of Cinematic Platformer. This was my personal game of E3 and probably my most anticipated game of 2018.
While the reveal trailer is one of the best that I’ve ever seen, the truth is that we really don’t know a lot. We don’t know the actual setting or the anything about the story at all. There is no clear indication exactly how the game will play and if there is more than just an hour or two of pretty graphics worth of content. We are dealing with a first time developer with nothing to go by outside of a minutes and half trailer over 6 months ago. The game has as much a change to crash and burn as it does to soar.
If the buzz coming out of E3 2017 is any indication, The Last Night made an impression. This will bode well for the title when it’s release. It was also a huge win for Microsoft to secure The Last Night as a Console Launch Exclusive. This simply means that it will hit PC and Xbox at the same time, but it will not launch on other platforms until a later date. Fans have been very vocal about exclusive games on the Xbox One, so we will see if they support the ones that we do get, even if just temporarily.
Am I the only one pumped for The Last Night? Do you think the game will actually launch in 2018? Let us know in the comments.
