There is a no doubt that 2017 was one of the best years in video game history. The Xbox saw amazing games like Cuphead, Forza 7, and PUBG launch exclusively. When you also consider amazing releases like Middle Earth: Shadow of War, Assassin’s Creed Origins, Destiny 2, and Injustice 2 its easy to see what the hype was all about. Microsoft capped off it’s year with the launch of the most powerful home console of all time, the Xbox One X.
With that momentum, it’s clear that gamers are in for another fantastic year in 2018. The writers here at Xbox Enthusiasts are going to highlight a handful of video games that we are most excited for this year. Ranging from console exclusives like Sea of Thieves and State of Decay 2 to huge 3rd party games like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Monster Hunter World. Here are the video games that we are most excited about in 2018.
A Way Out is a 2 Player Action Adventure game. The lead characters, Leo and Vincent, start the game in prison. It is the player’s job to help them escape and avoid the authorities. Players work together solving puzzles and covering each other’s back.
Biomutant is the first game from Experiment 101. Made up of former Avalanche Studio employees (known for their work on the Just Cause series), you know this game will be big on action. Biomutant is a 3rd-person, open-world action/RPG set in a futuristic world full of anthropomorphic animals. The gameplay centers on character mutations, and according to the Biomutant website, you’ll be able to “recode your genetic structure to change the way you look and play”. Outside of character traits, you’ll also be able to change your characters gear as well as pilot many different vehicles.
The third game in the Crackdown series. You once again play as an unnamed agent who is tasked with taking down the crime syndicate that has taken over the city. It’s also set to be a big advertisement for Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing service with the multiplayer featuring some truly spectacular destruction made possible by the cloud.
Dragon Ball FighterZ is the latest fighting game in the popular franchise. While the previously released Xenoverse series features custom characters and heavy emphasis on online components, Dragon Ball Fighter Z focuses primarily on fast-paced, fierce, and fluid combat. The roster includes popular characters throughout the Dragon Ball series since the franchise’s debut in 1986.
Full Metal Furies is a take on the beat ’em up genre from Cellar Door Games, the studio known for the stellar Rogue Legacy. This game features four unique characters each with their own play styles, abilities, and difficulty levels. Full Metal Furies is fast, fierce, and challenging, with a focus on cooperative gameplay. There’s local, online co-op, and Cross-Platform play (via Play Anywhere), but people who prefer to play solo will be able to swap characters on the fly. The visuals have a retro feel, but the gameplay mechanics are very modern and even contain a few RPG elements for fans of character customization.
Simply put, Monster Hunter is a series about pillaging resources, defeating monsters, and leveling up your gear to take on the next giant behemoth around the bend. Not only are you gathering resources and elements from within the world, but upon defeating a monster, you must loot their body to gather additional assets to adhere to your gladiatorial ambitions and advance your armor sets. It is this hook that keeps fans coming back for more. You can easily sink hundreds of hours trying to craft the perfect weapons and armor. In the world of Monster Hunter, your gear is your badge of honor to your compatriots.
The Last Night is categorized as a Pixel Art Cinematic Platformer. Not much is known about the story but gamers will take the role of “Charlie”, described as a low class citizen is a cyberpunk-esque society. The mechanics will include stealth, shooting, and problem solving as well as Charlie’s ability to freely talk with any other character in the game.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is a follow up to one of the best games released during the Xbox 360 generation, the original Red Dead Redemption. The events of the game will be set prior to the events in the original. Red Dead Redemption 2 has you taking the role of Arthur Morgan. Arthur is a member of Dutch van der Linde’s gang. This is the same gang that John Marston was helping to bring down in Red Dead Redemption. Red Dead Redemption 2 is a huge, open-world wild west game from the makers of the Grand Theft Auto franchise.
Hopefully Rare getting back to their creative best. The game is built around online multiplayer and involves pirates in a world that is quintessentially Rare. As to what the story or plot of the game will be, other than it being a bit pirate-y, we haven’t been given any hints or clues. When introducing the game, Craig Gordon described how players could have ‘unique and memorable adventures together’ in a ‘shared world adventure game’, and went on to say that ‘this game will bring players together and give them the freedom to play with limitless possibilities’. Whether this means that there won’t be a traditional-style narrative, we don’t know, but if there are ‘unique and memorable adventures’ there have to at least be some traditional scripted moments.
The Sword Art Online video game franchise adopted an action adventure style, which took some cues from Monster Hunter. While those games are fun, there’s something lacking. The story isn’t as good as the anime, despite being canonical. Apart from that issue, the gameplay is fun and engaging. It’s awesome to quest with popular characters from the anime.
Wargroove is a Turn-Based Tactical game. Similar to games like Ogre Battle, Disgaea, and Fire Emblem. You can choose from 1 or 12 commanders, each of which have their own unique campaign. Along with the single player campaign, the game offers local and online multiplayer modes.
