If you have been following Xbox Enthusiast for a while now you may have noticed some changes recently. The company that we are a part of has been growing and changes are afoot. You may have already heard that alongside our sister sites Nintendo Enthusiast and PlayStation Enthusiast we are now also teamed up with Destructoid and Daily Esports. Well, our network just got a little bigger as The Escapist has now become part of the Enthusiast Gaming family as well.
The Escapist was started back in 2005 and has averaged over 6 million monthly visits since 2008. Back in October, they announced that all paid staff had been laid off with the exception of Ben “Yahtzee” Croshaw (of the Zero Punctuation series) and a few others. The site was then put up for sale by its owners Defy Media.
Enthusiast Gaming finalised the purchase of the site last week and has reinstated former editor-in-chief Russ Pitts to his position on the site. Here’s what Menashe Kestenbaum, founder and CEO of Enthusiast Gaming, had to say about the acquisition and the reinstatement of Pitts-
“The acquisition of Escapist is instrumental as we continue to grow our network of gamers. Escapist represents long form and intellectual content generation and will be another flagship platform in our network.”
“Russ is a true visionary in online gaming journalism and we are thrilled to bring him back to lead Escapist.”
Here’s what Russ Pitts had to say about the situation –
“Escapist Magazine holds a special place in my heart as the place where I started my career in games. Enthusiast truly gets what makes game communities special and is fully invested in getting this right. The opportunity to join with Enthusiast to help bring Escapist back to its original cultural relevance is a huge opportunity not only for me and my team, but for the many fans of Escapist who have been so supportive of the brand for over 13 years”
Pitts when on to write a lengthy piece on Medium, here are some of the highlights –
“Today’s Escapist Magazine is not going to be what it was before. (Or even what it was before that.) I think you’ll be surprised, and even maybe a little enchanted with what we have planned. But a lot of what Escapist Magazine will be is still waiting to be discovered. I’m assembling an editorial team right now to help me discover it.”
“One thing I can tell you without delay or equivocation: We’re leaving politics at the door. Most of us have thoughts about politics. Just like most of you. And, because we’re creators, those thoughts might show up in our work. Avoiding that would be unnatural. That said, I can promise you no one here will share their politics in an attempt to convince you yours are wrong. And your worth will not be calculated based on whether you’re on the left or on the right. Politics are everywhere, but they don’t have to be everything. We’re going to focus on what’s fun, and we hope you’ll join us in that.”
All of us at Xbox Enthusiast welcome The Escapist to the Enthusiast Gaming family and look forward to it returning to its former glory.
