During the Kinda Funny Games Showcase, Playdius revealed the release date for Away: Journey to the Unexpected. Xbox One owners looking for a new roguelike with a fresh feel should check out Away on February 8th. What sets the game apart from most in the genre is the protagonist. You play as a character without any set of skills at all. He’s terrible at combat and is equipped with only a stick. Fortunately, he’s great at one thing; making new friends. And honestly, what’s more important than developing friendships?
In Away: Journey to the Unexpected is about social interaction. Almost any character you encounter can be recruited to your party. This is where the game’s uniqueness shines. Every single character plays and looks differently. Since Away is a first-person shooter, we see through the eyes of each protagonist. All of their visual styles fit their personality. If a character is colorblind, the game will be in black and white. If a character has cracked glasses, part of the screen will feature a crack.

It’s a unique aesthetic that makes Away: Journey to the Unexpected a wholly original experience. I played a part of the game at PAX East 2016, and haven’t stopped thinking about the game since. As a huge gamer and anime fan, Away hooked me toward the screen instantly. The visuals are fantastic, and the gameplay is addictive. So many video games feature dark and brooding characters. It’s great to see Away: Journey to the Unexpected embrace positivity. Xbox fans should check out the game when it launches on February 8th, 2019.
