With the passing of the old year and the dawning of the new comes renewed hopes and expectations for the year ahead. Lord Alfred Tennyson, Queen Victoria’s Poet Laureate, once wrote: Hope smiles from the threshold of the year to come, whispering ‘it will be happier.’ Ah, but who cares about all that, a new year means new games!
2018 was a little disappointing for Xbox fans, so we’re hoping that 2019 proves to be a lot better. Over the next couple of weeks, we’re going to be highlighting a different game each day, giving you all the relevant details and salient talking points for big games of the year. With so many upcoming titles we’ve decided to do this in order of release date. Today, we’re launching with the first big release of January, Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown.
Title: Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown
Publisher: Bandai Namco Entertainment
Developer: Bandai Namco Studios
Release Date: 18th January
What is it?
The latest entry in the popular Ace Combat franchise. This ninth game (yeah, we know) in the series is set during the Second Usean Continental War. If this means nothing to you, then we wouldn’t worry as it’s just an excuse for more aerial combat. With the action taking place in 2019, it features lots of present-day fighter jets like the F-22A and Su-57. Managing to blend a realistic feel with approachable handling yet greater depth for fans, this could be the flying game that this generation has been crying out for.
What could go right?
While rarely spectacular, the Ace Combat series has always been solid. With almost no other flying games available, Skies Unknown is a very welcome addition to the Xbox One library. I enjoyed my hands-on with the game, back in September. Despite having just fleeting experience with any of the previous games, I still managed to have some fun. Flight controls were accessible allowing me to jump straight in. The visuals were passable with a few nice effects, like heat haze and air pressure changes. There was always lots to do with enemies left, right, and center. If you like flying games, then this is a game you should check out.
What could go wrong?
Just reading the plot about the ‘Second Usean Continental War’ between the ‘Osean Federation’ and the ‘Kingdom of Erusea’ is confusing. Here’s hoping that Namco Bandai keeps it light and focus on the action rather than the plot. The desert setting of the demo could also get pretty dull, pretty quickly. Here’s hoping that there is an array of locations and enemies to keep things interesting. The Ace Combat series is kind of like vanilla ice cream. It’s not really anyone’s first choice but isn’t really disliked either.
Well, that’s what we think of Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown. Are you excited about the game? Are you likely to pick it up? Why not share your thoughts in the comment section below? And don’t forget to come back tomorrow for our next big game of 2019
