With the passing of the old year and the dawning of the new comes renewed hopes and expectations for the year ahead. Lord Alfred Tennyson, Queen Victoria’s Poet Laureate, once wrote: Hope smiles from the threshold of the year to come, whispering ‘it will be happier.’ Ah, but who cares about all that, a new year means new games!
2018 was a little disappointing for Xbox fans, so we’re hoping that 2019 proves to be a lot better. Over the next couple of weeks, we’re going to be highlighting a different game each day, giving you all the relevant details and salient talking points for big games of the year. With so many upcoming titles we’ve decided to do this in order of release date. Today, we’re talking about a game that was only announced a month ago and launches next month, Far Cry New Dawn.
Title: Far Cry New Dawn
Publisher: Ubisoft Montreal
Release Date: 15th February
What is it?
Far Cry New Dawn is to Far Cry 5 what Far Cry Primal was to Far Cry 4. A sort of standalone expansion pack that utilises assets from the last game to create something new. In this case, instead of going thousands of years back in time, the game goes seventeen years into the future. Following a ‘nuclear doomsday’ Hope County has changed to be more bright and colourful, thanks to a ‘superbloom.’ People are starting to rebuild this world and are forming factions to help each other survive. The most vicious of which are the Highwaymen, led by the Twins, Mickey and Lou. Can you aid the survivors in defeating this new threat and help to rebuild New Hope County?
What could go right?
Far Cry has a solid track record. Even the divisive Far Cry 2 wasn’t a bad game. The premise for New Dawn offers a whole new way to explore the map of Far Cry 5. It also provides an excuse for an over the top, colourful landscape; something that the franchise hasn’t really seen before. This is also a title that is going to offer many hours of gameplay at a budget price. With solid shooter mechanics, an impressive open world, and some gorgeous visuals, this could be a great FPS to start the year.
What could go wrong?
Assuming that this is going to be more like Far Cry Primal than Far Cry 5, this could just feel like an over-stretched idea. It’s also in danger of trying to change things up and just becoming like lots of other games. I find it difficult to watch the gameplay trailer without thinking of Mad Max and the upcoming Rage 2. While we welcome a couple of strong female protagonists, they deserve to have a strong motive and backstory. Nothing we have seen from the game would indicate that they are anything more than run-of-the-mill villains. There’s also the possibility that Ubisoft could be oversaturating the market with Far Cry. With three entries in the franchise in three years, it’s likely that only hardcore Far Cry fans will be interested.
That’s what we think about Far Cry New Dawn. Are you a fan of the franchise? Are you looking forward to shooting through Hope County again? Be sure to leave a comment below and look out for more coverage throughout the month regarding the games that will launch on Xbox One during 2019.
