With the passing of the old year and the dawning of the new comes renewed hopes and expectations for the year ahead. Lord Alfred Tennyson, Queen Victoria’s Poet Laureate, once wrote: Hope smiles from the threshold of the year to come, whispering ‘it will be happier.’ Ah, but who cares about all that, a new year means new games!
2018 was a little disappointing for Xbox fans, so we’re hoping that 2019 proves to be a lot better. Over the next couple of weeks, we’re going to be highlighting a different game each day, giving you all the relevant details and salient talking points for big games of the year. With so many upcoming titles we’ve decided to do this in order of release date. Today, we’re talking about the upcoming release from developer BioWare, Anthem.
Publisher: Electronic Arts
Release date: February 22, 2019
What is it?
Anthem is BioWare’s first co-operative action RPG based in a gorgeous, unfinished world abandoned by the gods. The game’s protagonists are known as “Freelancers”, pilots of robotic exosuits called Javelins which are used in order to explore and survive the planet. The Javelins come in 4 varieties: Ranger, Colossus, Interceptor, and Storm each with their own individual strengths. Freelancers use these suits to fight against the “evil villains” present in the world and to explore the vast unknown expanse of their world.
What could go right?
It can be said without hesitation that the BioWare team are Action-RPG crafting masters. With mega-hit blockbuster titles like Mass Effect and Dragon Age series in their portfolio, it is not an egregious stretch to be incredibly hopeful for this game. From excerpts and the live-stream demos, we can see that from a graphics perspective it is visually stunning. The world is breathtakingly beautiful. The textures and color rendition are incredible and have only seemed to get better with each video release. The upgradeable exosuit, which grows with the player’s level, is also a really interesting concept. Lastly, with a co-op centered combat system Anthem looks to continue the common theme of getting gamers to work together to jointly achieve their goals.
What could go wrong?
Anthem seems to have a lot going for it. The buzz around the internet is extremely good. But for all of its visual accolades, the biggest mystery surrounding the games potential success is quite simple: what the hell is it about? We’ve learned a few interesting tidbits through videos revealing in-game history such as the Legion of Dawn, but frankly we know very little about the games actual story. Can BioWare prove that Mass Effect: Andromeda was just an anomaly and return to winning ways? As beautiful as it is if the story is weak the game could be a bust. Another aspect which serves to make co-operative games like these problematic is how will the team dynamics work? What is this game going to do differently than similar games like Titanfall and Destiny?
Well, those are our musings about Anthem. What do you think? Is this pre-order worthy or are you going to wait to see how some reviews rate the experience? Let us know what you think in the comments section below. Stay tuned for tomorrow’s next big game of 2019!
