With the passing of the old year and the dawning of the new comes renewed hopes and expectations for the year ahead. Lord Alfred Tennyson, Queen Victoria’s Poet Laureate, once wrote: Hope smiles from the threshold of the year to come, whispering ‘it will be happier.’ Ah, but who cares about all that, a new year means new games!
2018 was a little disappointing for Xbox fans, so we’re hoping that 2019 proves to be a lot better. Over the next couple of weeks, we’re going to be highlighting a different game each day, giving you all the relevant details and salient talking points for big games of the year. With so many upcoming titles we’ve decided to do this in order of release date. Today, we’re talking about a game that no-one was expecting and was only announced a few months ago, DiRT Rally 2.0.
Title: DiRT Rally 2.0
Release Date: 26th February
What is it?
This is the sequel to 2015’s DiRT Rally and also a sibling of DiRT 4. As the name suggests, this is a rally game. No gymkhana, or other hooning around, is on offer here. It’s a much more serious representation of the sport with a strong focus on realism. This time around it also has the official license for the FIA World Rallycross Championship, so expect a strong emphasis on that discipline.
What could go right?
Codemasters is one of the best racing developers in the world. Their F1 games and DiRT titles are absolutely top-notch. Providing both great visuals and superb gameplay. The first DiRT Rally title was a return to the original focus of what the Colin McRae Rally/DiRT games were all about. These were serious rallying simulators and were the best in the business. After the arcade-style DiRT: Showdown, this was a game going back to its roots and it was praised for it. That game went through Steam Early Access and was almost seen as a low-risk way of checking that there was still life in the franchise. With DiRT Rally 2.0, Codemasters can go all out to create the best rallying sim ever. We for one, wouldn’t bet against them managing that lofty goal.
What could go wrong?
DiRT Rally wasn’t for everyone and was unapologetically tough. Codemasters will obviously lean into this again, we just hope that they don’t go too far and make it unapproachable. There were problems with the progression system last time around, meaning that if you changed your career trajectory, you were at a major disadvantage. While this may be a more realistic thing to include, it massively limits the way you play the game. Most of all, Codemasters has to strike that fine balance of a tough, unforgiving game that is still fun to play. It’s a very fine balance and we just hope that these racing experts manage it.
That’s what we think about DiRT Rally 2.0. Are you a fan of the franchise? Are you looking forward to flying around more dirt tracks at high speed? Be sure to leave a comment below and look out for more coverage throughout the month regarding the games that will launch on Xbox One during 2019.
