With the passing of the old year and the dawning of the new comes renewed hopes and expectations for the year ahead. Lord Alfred Tennyson, Queen Victoria’s Poet Laureate, once wrote: Hope smiles from the threshold of the year to come, whispering ‘it will be happier.’ Ah, but who cares about all that, a new year means new games!
2018 was a little disappointing for Xbox fans, so we’re hoping that 2019 proves to be a lot better. Over the next couple of weeks, we’re going to be highlighting a different game each day, giving you all the relevant details and salient talking points for big games of the year. With so many upcoming titles we’ve decided to do this in order of release date. Today, we’re talking about the upcoming release from NetherRealm Studios & Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment, Mortal Kombat 11.
Title: Mortal Kombat 11
Developer: NetherRealm Studios
Publisher: Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment
Release date: April 23, 2019
What is it?
Mortal Kombat 11, as one could guess, is the eleventh installment of the fighting game classic. Unless you’ve lived under a rock for the last 27 years you’ll know that Mortal Kombat is synonymous with the fighting genre. This latest game is a direct sequel to the events of Mortal Kombat X.
What could go right?
NeatherRealm Studios previous entry in the series was received well by players and critics alike. Its ‘return to the basics’ style, re-calibrating the fighting mechanics, the introduction of brutal finishers, and exploration of two decades worth of timelines and family trees rounded out its offerings. While the single-player campaign mode may have been a bit forced, it did provide a fun way to explore character backstory. It also allowed players to begin mastering the various combat styles while getting to know the characters in more depth. From the teaser video, we’ve seen brutality taken even further in a fight between Dark Raiden and Scorpion. While the musical score met with mixed reviews, the graphics and video quality of the trailer looked incredible. If the finishers and fight mechanics have continued to evolve it could be a very interesting experience.
What could go wrong?
While the trailer does look visually stunning one has to consider whether the music choice could be indicative of a disconnect with their audience. If Mortal Kombat 11 does not continue to evolve its possible that it may leave a poor taste in players mouths. While Mortal Kombat X’s gameplay mechanics were solid, will the inevitable additions to 11 add further value? Will the writers be able to continue the storyline in a way that feels cohesive? What changes will the additions to the character lineup bring?
Well, those are our musings about Mortal Kombat 11. Keep an eye out for more news today as we will learn more as “The Reveal” takes place at 10:30 am PST. So, what do you think? Is this pre-order worthy or are you going to wait to see how some reviews rate the experience? Let us know what you think in the comments section below. Stay tuned for tomorrow’s next big game of 2019!
