Games of 2019 – Control

With the passing of the old year and the dawning of the new comes renewed hopes and expectations for the year ahead. Lord Alfred Tennyson, Queen Victoria’s Poet Laureate, once wrote: Hope smiles from the threshold of the year to come, whispering ‘it will be happier.’ Ah, but who cares about all that, a new year means new games!

2018 was a little disappointing for Xbox fans, so we’re hoping that 2019 proves to be a lot better. Over the next couple of weeks, we’re going to be highlighting a different game each day, giving you all the relevant details and salient talking points for big games of the year. With so many upcoming titles we’ve decided to do this in order of release date. Today, we’re talking about the latest game from Remedy Entertainment, Control.

Game Details

Title: Control
Publisher: 505 Games
Developer: Remedy Entertainment
Release Date: 2019

What is it?

The latest game from Sam Lake and the team at Remedy Entertainment. You play as Jesse Faden who has just been promoted to the role of Director of the Federal Bureau of Control. This is a government agency that investigates supernatural phenomena. With strange goings-on occurring at the Oldest House, a skyscraper in Manhattan, you are called in to investigate.

What could go right?

Did you read the part where I said that this is a game from Remedy Entertainment? The Finnish developer has a track record that can only really be rivalled by Rockstar. This is the team behind Max Payne 1 and 2Alan Wake, and Quantum Break. They are masters at storytelling and always add interesting new mechanics to their titles. Control comes over as a cross of the horror elements of Alan Wake along with the feel of Quantum Break. The visuals are stunning and quite arresting when featuring the more paranormal elements. The weaponry looks particularly cool as it changes shape. We fully expect this to be an incredibly gripping adventure that takes us for a wild ride.

What could go wrong?

The first thing I have to mention is that although this is slated for a 2019 release, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if this slips back to 2020. Remedy Entertainment is not the kind of studio to rush a game out. If they think that it needs a bit longer in development, they’ll push it back and make sure they get it right. The other slight concern is that although Remedy Entertainment are masters when it comes to story and visuals, some people are left a little cold by their gameplay. I personally have never really had a problem with it. I do know people who found the gameplay of Alan Wake to be frustrating and Quantum Break to be clunky. It’s all a matter of taste I suppose.

That’s what we think about Control. Are you a fan of Remedy Entertainment? Are you looking forward to more cinematic action, great storytelling, and impressive visuals? Be sure to leave a comment below and look out for more coverage throughout the month regarding the games that will launch on Xbox One during 2019.
