The one game that we knew was going to be on show at the Square Enix E3 press conference was their collaboration with Marvel. The project, which has been in development at Crystal Dynamics (best known for developing Tomb Raider) for several years, is now officially called Marvel’s Avengers. This isn’t an MCU game, though. The developers on stage went to great lengths to explain that this is Crystal Dynamics’ take on the Avengers. It is made in co-operation with Marvel but it appears to live in its own universe. The main by-product of this distinction is that it does not use the voices or likenesses of the movie cast. However, they have got an impressive cast of voice actors to come in and play these roles. These include Nolan North as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Troy Baker as Bruce Banner/The Hulk, and Laura Bailey as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow.
The footage shown began with the team gathering together for a public celebration in their honour, Avengers Day. This is disturbed by an explosion on the Golden Gate Bridge in the background. Captain America sends Thor and Iron Man to go and check it out. From there we get a load of action with some Hulk thrown into the mix as well. It soon becomes clear that something isn’t right and as they are taking care of enemies on the bridge, the Avengers Helicarrier goes down in the bay and wipes out a large section of San Francisco. The action then cuts to several years later and Steve Rogers is arguing with Tony Stark. We then get an array of various action scenes showing off the various heroes.
The developers on stage pretty much confirmed that this will be a live service game. However, they went to great lengths to point out that there won’t be any loot boxes or pay-to-win mechanics. We then learned that the game will launch on 15th May next year. You can check out the trailer for the game as well as the official description down below –
Marvel’s Avengers begins at A-Day, where Captain America, Iron Man, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Thor are unveiling a hi-tech Avengers Headquarters in San Francisco — including the reveal of their own helicarrier powered by an experimental energy source. The celebration turns deadly when a catastrophic accident results in massive devastation. Blamed for the tragedy, the Avengers disband. Five years later, with all Super Heroes outlawed and the world in peril, the only hope is to reassemble Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
Marvel Entertainment and Square Enix are excited to unveil Marvel’s Avengers, an epic action-adventure game that combines cinematic storytelling with single-player and co-operative gameplay. Developed by Crystal Dynamics in collaboration with Eidos-Montréal, Nixxes Software, and Crystal Northwest, Marvel’s Avengers will release simultaneously for the PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system, the Xbox One family of devices including Xbox One X, Stadia, and PC on May 15, 2020.
