With the passing of the old year and the dawning of the new comes renewed hopes and expectations for the year ahead. Lord Alfred Tennyson, Queen Victoria’s Poet Laureate, once wrote: Hope smiles from the threshold of the year to come, whispering ‘it will be happier.’ Ah, but who cares about all that, a new year means new games!
2018 was a little disappointing for Xbox fans, so we’re hoping that 2019 proves to be a lot better. Over the next couple of weeks, we’re going to be highlighting a different game each day, giving you all the relevant details and salient talking points for big games of the year. With so many upcoming titles we’ve decided to do this in order of release date. Today, we’re talking about a game that has been delayed so many times; we wondered if it was ever going to come out, Crackdown 3.
Title: Crackdown 3
Publisher: Microsoft Studios
Developer: Sumo Digital
Release Date: 15th February
What is it?
The third game in the Crackdown series. You once again play as an unnamed agent who is tasked with taking down the crime syndicate that has taken over the city. You have free reign to take them down as you see fit. Will you take out their armourer first to limit their access to weapons. Perhaps you will take out their money launderer to restrict their finances. The choice is yours. Alongside the fully cooperative campaign, there’s also the highly ambitious multiplayer. The level of destruction is unprecedented thanks to the power of Microsoft’s cloud processors. And of course, there’s also Terry Crews as Commander Jaxon.
What could go right?
The first Crackdown title was something of a surprise hit. A lot of people bought it purely for the Halo 3 beta access that was included with the game. They were then captivated by the open-world gameplay and general carnage that you were able to undertake. Having that same amount of freedom in a next-generation sandbox would be an absolute blast. The multiplayer could also be a gamechanger. If the epic destructibility works as it could, then this could be the start of a new wave in multiplayer mayhem.
What could go wrong?
Even the most ardent Crackdown fan (and we have several at Enthusiast Towers) has to be a little concerned by the numerous delays and change of developers. It’s not even as though Crackdown is a series with a flawless pedigree. While the first game was a great title, Crackdown 2 was not loved by most gamers. The ambitious multiplayer could just as easily cripple the game as elevate it. Much has been made about the destructibility on offer, but if there’s no depth to the gameplay, it will all be for nothing.
That’s what we think about Crackdown 3. Are you a fan of the franchise? Are you looking forward to taking on the role of an agent again? Be sure to leave a comment below and look out for more coverage throughout the month regarding the games that will launch on Xbox One during 2019.
