With the passing of the old year and the dawning of the new comes renewed hopes and expectations for the year ahead. Lord Alfred Tennyson, Queen Victoria’s Poet Laureate, once wrote: Hope smiles from the threshold of the year to come, whispering ‘it will be happier.’ Ah, but who cares about all that, a new year means new games!
2018 was a little disappointing for Xbox fans, so we’re hoping that 2019 proves to be a lot better. Over the next couple of weeks, we’re going to be highlighting a different game each day, giving you all the relevant details and salient talking points for big games of the year. With so many upcoming titles we’ve decided to do this in order of release date. Today, we’re talking about the latest entry in one of Xbox’s biggest tentpoles, Gears 5
Title: Gears 5
Publisher: Microsoft Studios
Developer: The Coalition
Release Date: 2019
What is it?
Gears 5 sees the focus shift from Marcus and JD Fenix to Kait Diaz. In this continuation of the franchise, we’ll uncover the history of the Locust and Kait’s family. Of course, we’ll still get to see Marcus, JD, and Del. It also looks like we’ll be seeing new locations on Sera with both frozen areas and a lush forested area teased in the trailer.
What could go right?
After Gears of War 4 managed to reinvigorate the franchise, we’ excited for Gears 5. The previous entry introduced us to some interesting characters in JD and Del, but it was Kait and her backstory that seemed the most intriguing. Exploring her family’s history and their connection to the Locust is definitely a good area to explore. Of course, what we’re really hoping is that we’ll get to spend more time with her brilliant uncle, Oscar Diaz. The new locations look like it will broaden the palate of the series and move it away from the greys and browns that we’re used to. Let’s hope this is to Gears of War 4 what the second game was to the first.
What could go wrong?
While we did enjoy Gears of War 4, we did find it rather formulaic. This is often the case when trying to get a franchise started again. There were a couple of nice additions to the gameplay, but the majority of the campaign was just corridor, corridor, wide open space, firefight, and repeat. This was somewhat forgivable once. If Gears 5 is the same again, then we won’t be so forgiving. As much as we like the focus moving on to Kait, we also hope that we’ll still get to spend some time with Marcus and JD. They’re the characters that drew us into the franchise, and it would be a shame to completely sideline them now.
That’s what we think about Gears 5. Are you a fan of the franchise? Are you looking forward to more cinematic action and splitting people in two with a chainsaw?
