Overwatch 2 has been announced at Blizzcon 2019, along with a few other heavy hitters from Blizzard. However, the next Overwatch works slightly different than your average sequel. Rather than a full reset, Overwatch 2 will introduce a set of PvE missions, whilst building on the same multiplayer suite already established with the first Overwatch.
This means that all your unlocks from Overwatch will carry over to 2, along with the first game’s maps and modes. A new set of maps will be added though, alongside a set of new heroes. How this will all work between the two games remains to be seen. Blizzard says that the player pool will remain together, and that Overwatch players will be able to play all the new PvP content without needing the sequel.
The PvE missions will be the main reason to purchase the sequel then. They are set to build out the world of Overwatch, pitching classic hero characters and new ones, against rising threats around the globe. Overwatch 2 then, has the opportunity to bring new players in who are more interested in story content. Having said that, what we know so far doesn’t sound like a proper sequel, with there being PvE “missions” rather than a full campaign.
There is no release period just yet for Overwatch 2. The new gameplay trailer is available below.
