Sea of Thieves welcomes you to the Fort of the Damned

We’re now approaching the end of October and that means that lots of games are going to start adding spooky elements to tie-in with the Halloween festivities. Up first this year is Sea of Thieves. Rare’s open-world Pirate sandbox is a pretty good fit for this kind of thing as you already battle skeletons. Well, they’ve taken things a step further with the ‘Fort of the Damned’ update.

‘Fort of the Damned’ offers up lots of gruesome new content culminating in a battle with a familiar foe. In an interesting twist, to gain access to your final goal you’ll actually have to die in specific ways and gain six different coloured flames of fate from the Ferry of the Damned. Here’s a trailer breaking down the new content as well as the official description –

Beware, pirates, there’s evil abroad in this most hallowed of seasons! The Fort of the Damned has arisen, where dangerous lost souls have gained a foothold in our world. It’s up to you to send them howling back to the grave. You’ll need to work with other pirates and even the Ferryman himself to combat the strange new threat guarding this supernatural skeleton stronghold: the Shadows of Fate.

The dead have dug themselves in at Old Boot Fort, now twisted by the encroaching presence of death and better known as the Fort of the Damned! Using a Ritual Skull and the six coloured lights of the Flames of Fate – obtained by being sent to the Ferry of the Damned in various fatal ways – pirates can wake the Fort and set about sending its sinister skeletal defenders to oblivion. Riches are sure to lie within! Savvy pirates should talk to Stitcher Jim for more information. He’s likely to be found scouting out the Fort from a nearby island.

Attacking the Fort of the Damned won’t be easy, as it’s defended by Shadow of Fate Skeletons – a new kind of Shadow Skeleton whose sole weakness is a matching flame from the Ferry of the Damned! Organisation and co-operation will be vital as pirates form Alliances to combat this epic threat. If you’re short on Ritual Skulls to sacrifice in the Fort, Duke has your back with Voyages that lead to guaranteed Skulls, either from scrapping with skellies or tracking down hidden stashes.

The Bilge Rats always sniff out danger first, so begin by speaking to Duke in any tavern for tips on tackling the Fort of the Damned. He can offer you Skull Seeker Voyages leading to Shadow Captains, who safeguard Ritual Skulls – the final component needed to rouse the Fort’s denizens. Just watch out for ambush by Shadows of Fate, and don’t be afraid to flee with your spoils if you don’t have the right Flame of Fate. Alternatively, a Skull Stash Voyage will give you almost immediate access to a Bilge Rat stash without the need to go out and fight, but it comes at a price!

The ‘Fort of the Damned’ update for Sea of Thieves is available now.
