Xbox has been acquiring studios recently to bolster its first-party lineup. As some of the studios purchased were already making games, they will release titles on PS4 and Nintendo Switch, even whilst owned by Microsoft. Head of Xbox Games Studios Matt Booty has said this may continue into the future. Of course, this has already happened with the likes of Minecraft and Cuphead.
When chatting with gameinformer, Booty said it would likely come down to a per-franchise basis. “In other words, is it a kind of game where it would benefit from the network effect of being on a bunch of different platforms, or is it a game where we can best support it by putting resources and making sure that our platforms, things like Xcloud and Game Pass and Xbox Live, are really leaning in to support the game?”
Recently acquired Double Fine Productions will launch Psychonauts 2 on multiple platforms. As will Obsidian Entertainment with this year’s Outer Worlds. Whether upcoming titles from these studios will be Xbox exclusive remains to be seen. However, it looks like Microsoft will make that judgement with each title.
Would Xbox Games Studios titles releasing on PS4 and Switch bother you? Or are you just happy to see more players experience these games?
