We’re a little over a week away from X019, and rumours have been swirling around what we might see at the show. Games, games and more games are confirmed, but it has been a little while since a studio acquisition was announced. Yooka-Laylee developer Playtonic was one of the names thrown around as the next purchase, but they have put that rumour to bed.
Microsoft went on a studio shopping spree not long ago, picking up the likes of Obsidian entertainment and Ninja Theory. On the eve of X019, it was looking like we might see some more announcements. However, Playtonic released a statement earlier today saying that they are staying independent and will not be added to the Xbox Games Studios family.

There was also a rumour that if Playtonic were to come aboard, they would be working on a new Banjo-Kazooie. After all, their current Yooka-Laylee franchise is very much inspired by Banjo-Kazooie. In fact, some of the developers worked on both franchises.
Banjo-Kazooie was created by Rare, who Microsoft now own. If Microsoft are looking into reviving the series, Rare seems the ideal choice. Sea of Thieves, Rare’s latest adventure, has been out for some time now. We’ll have to wait and see what the famous developer is up to next.
What studio would you like Microsoft to acquire?
